GULU-National Volleyball League defending champions Nemostars will go into next month’s playoffs as top seeds.
The Kololo-based club claimed the summit with on the 10-team log with two games to play after a successful weekend in Gulu.
Nemostars saw off the homeside GAVC and Uganda Christian University (UCU) Doves in straight sets at the Kaunda Grounds on Saturday.
The two wins took Nemostars to 48 points to ensure they have attained victory 14 times in straight sets this season.
The side has only dropped two sets against Mulago and Nkumba.
“It was our target to secure our playoffs berth as soon as possible,” said stand-in captain Smith Okumu.
“We knew that we would be in the playoff anyway but to claim the number one spot this early gets us off pressure,” he added.
It was hard to tell that Nemostars’ best player George Aporu was missing as cousin Eric Ojamuge took care of proceedings in the center. The former had family commitments to attend to.
GAVC, without coach Stephen Otara on their bench looked vulnerable as Nemostars butchered them 25-20, 25-9 and 25-9 in just 45 minutes.
“Our approach against GAVC would determine our performance against UCU hence the brutal approach,” Okumu added
Though UCU tried to put up some resistance, Okumu, Ojamuge, Christopher Ajena and Anthony Oleuko proved impenetrable with their blocks.
Nemostars registered 25-17, 25-22 and 25-19 to wrap up a dominant weekend in 60 minutes.
“I rarely get playing time but when I do I want to give it my best shot,” said Ojamuge, who replaced captain Aporu. “I am glad to have played a major role.”
Louis Mubangizi and Tom Paul Amou provided the extra edge like they always do. The former with reception, cover and unexpected attacks, the latter with his back court attacks.
