GULU. Eight-time record holders Kibuli S.S have their dream of winning their first Copa Coca-cola title in nine years alive, having squeezed through to today’s final after beating Citizen High School 6-5 on penalties yesterday.
Kibuli won their last trophy in 2005 and have since seen their powers wane in the competition. Today, they face Arua’s Mvara SS, who beat Mehta College 2-1 in the other semi-final.
Striker Alfred Leku, who promised a spirited performance prior to the tourney, gave Kibuli a 20th minute lead, but Citizen replied 10 minutes later when Isaac Olwenyi converted a penalty on the half-hour mark.
Neither team scored again in normal time as the tie headed into post match penalties.
Kibuli has to thank playmaker Farouk Ssentongo, who converted the decisive sixth spot-kick that gave his side a hard-earned victory and ended Citizen’s quest when the score was tied 5-5.
“It was a hell of a game, both teams matching each other in strength and tactics but it is great we have made it,” said Abdallah Nakalya, head of football at Kibuli S.S.
Citizen have had a dream campaign in their second appearance and coach Ali Tabuley’s side forced their way into the tournament’s history books for eliminating defending champs St. Mary’s Kitende in the quarterfinals. They earlier today, play Mehta College in the third place playoff for the bronze medal.
