SC Villa woes deepen as Star Times plan to pull plug on sponsorship

KAMPALA. Whichever way you look at it, the unrest at SC Villa which owes its occurrence to the pending presidential elections have left deep wounds that could take time to heal.
The latest among hurt stakeholders are sponsors StarTimes Uganda, who are considering to pull plug on their sponsorship package to the club.
In November 2015, the 16-time record league champions and the Pay TV company signed a five-year deal worth Shs1.3bn, where the former would receive Shs260m per season from StarTimes.
“The club is not giving us any value and we are tired of their violence, fights and lack of direction,” StarTimes vice president Aldrine Nsubuga, told Daily Monitor. On Tuesday domestic football governing body Fufa, released a list of club owners. The list shows Lusaka Commodities, Ben Misagga and Moses Musazi as owners of Villa. However, it did not show each one’s stake.
Villa fans, however, question the ownership and have up to July 30th to object this. They also accuse Misagga of changing the club’s ownership status after assuming office in 2014, two years after a section of fans threw out Fred Muwema in 2012, to give him absolute powers at the club.
On Sunday however, Misagga stepped down as president blaming Fufa for postponing club elections where he was due to stand against little known Sostin Atwine. Club CEO Ivan Kakembo is now in charge of the club whose fans have called a crisis meeting on Sunday.
“We don’t even know who Villa is because everyone claims to be Villa. Our brand is at stake,” Nsubuga added in what is a continuation of his views in his Sunday column in the New Vision, where he called the situation at Villa an “unacceptable brand nightmare.”
Kakembo declined to comment on matters affecting the club when we reached him.
