What you need to know:

  • He scored a brace inside 25 minutes to take his tally to a league high nine goals and three in as many games following his match winner at Soana.

KAMPALA. At the end of a comfortable evening for his Vipers side, coach Miguel Da Costa took time off to recall how his side had been written off as title contenders.
“Three months ago Vipers was dead and had no chance of winning the championship. We humbled ourselves and worked, worked,” he stated.

He had just seen his team defeat Mbarara 2-0 at the St. Mary’s Stadium.
Most importantly however, the result gave his team a two point lead at the top of the Azam Uganda Premier League with hitherto leaders SC Villa and KCCA both not in action. Vipers now have 35 points after 18 games but have played one and two games more than Villa and KCCA respectively. The latter is third with 32 points three points behind.
The other pleasing aspect for Da Costa was another match winning performance from mid-season recruit Dan Serunkuma. He scored a brace inside 25 minutes to take his tally to a league high nine goals and three in as many games following his match winner at Soana.

It could have been even better had the striker not squandered a one on one and missed a penalty after side footing in the first goal from a Sekisambu pass and toe poking in the second. “Losing to Vipers is not news but I trust my team to improve. You can see the team is still young,” Mbarara coach Ibrahim Kirya observed.
His team drop to 10th with 21 points after 18 games and just four points above the relegation zone.
Former champions Express are at the bottom of that zone after Nelson Senkatuka’s double condemned them to a 2-1 loss to Bright Stars.
