Sserunkuma vows to carry on grind to title

What you need to know:

  • Soccer. In yesterday’s games, Mbarara and Masavu used home advantage to defeat Bul and Soana 2-1 and 1-0 respectively.

KAMPALA. Vipers’ priceless 1-0 victory over Azam Uganda Premier League (AUPL) table leaders, SC Villa, established an important trajectory to the title run-in.
Until Daniel Sserunkuma’s 30th-minute intervention to end Villa’s unbeaten home record in Masaka, the Jogoos were growing in some special confidence.
KCCA, whose title defence suffered a dent in the 1-1 draw at Onduparaka, and Vipers game in hand notwithstanding, Villa were beautifully five points clear at the top and in full control early Tuesday.

Title wide open
But Sserunkuma’s 11th goal of the season, level with Bright Stars’ Nelson Senkatuka, blew the title wide open, allowing Vipers to come within three points of Villa.
Villa top standings on 49 points, Vipers in second on 46 and KCCA a mark lower, with the Kasasiro Boys and Venoms having played a game fewer.
KCCA’s stalemate at Onduparaka, where Shaban Muhammad and Viane Sekajugo scored for respective sides, not only gave Vipers a thumbs up, it signalled an almighty three-horse race to the wire.
And Sserunkuma, a January acquisition from Express, is up to the fight, saying there is a great feeling that Vipers third title could be on the way.
“I’m very proud to see myself teammates this happy,” said Sserunkuma after his solitary strike ended Villa’s honeymoon at the Masaka Recreation Grounds on Tuesday.

Desperate for everything
“This is what the win means to us. We are thinking about each game.
“Our target is still winning the title. Yes, I want to score, and I want to help the team win the league. We are confident and we fight on.”
Villa and KCCA both have to face an Express side desperate for everything called a point to survive relegation in their remaining games.
KCCA also have to contend with a visit to Vipers at a St Mary’s Stadium where only URA and Paidha Black Angels have managed victories. Most clubs have six to seven matches to wrap up the season.
