There is no doubt that African champions Muhammed Essa of Zambia is top favourite to win the Mbarara Motor Club (MMC) Ecobank Sprint in Lubiri on Sunday. But there will be another interesting twist to the event when Ugandan ladies square off with Kenya’s Stella Macharia and Tanzania’s Eline Voojis.
2011 National Rally Champion Susan ‘Super Lady’ Muwonge and her ‘partner in crime’ Rose Lwakataka say they cannot wait for Sunday to silence their contemporaries. “I would like to prove my current ranking in the sport,” said Super Lady, who is ranked third in Uganda by International Rally Drivers Association (IRDA) with 232 points. “I also want to end my season on a high.”
Reigning national champion Jas Mangat (288) and Ronald Ssebuguzi (242) are the only drivers above Lwakataka, according to the IRDA rankings. Event coordinator George Ssemakula explained that in the first run, Super Lady will take on Macharia while Lwakataka will go head to head with the Tanzanian.
In the second run, the Ugandans will swap drivers. Already 39 drivers including Uganda’s top drivers have registered. The foreigners are led by Essa and Kenya’s Assad Anwar. There are also four drivers from Burundi.
The event is sponsored by Ecobank, Fire and Safety Appliances Ltd, Sema Properties Ltd and Kanu Connection.
