Entebbe- Uganda’s beach soccer players could feature at the World University Games if they continue to impress in local tournaments.
“As you play, try to give your best because we have people here looking out for the best players,” National University Sports Federation of Uganda (Nusfu) president Peninah Kabenge urged players while officiating at the Inter-University Pepsi Beach Soccer Championship opening ceremony on Saturday. “We should be able to select a team from some of you to represent Uganda at the World University Games and other internationl events,” Kabenge added during her speech at Lido Beach.
The next World University Games will be held in 2015 in Gwangju, South Korea. But to have beach soccer at the Games will take some lobbying on Kabenge and her team’s side as the sport is not one of the 13 compulsory disciplines.
There is, however, a provision for optional games at every edition and beach soccer can benefit from this if several countries push for it. Although beach soccer is one of the fastest growing games in Uganda, the country couldn’t send teams to any international competitions this year due to lack of funds.
But the recent involvement of Pepsi has given the fraternity renewed hope. The soft-drink company has taken over funding of the national league and backed the university event that ended last night.
