Injured Oringa suffers early exit

In Summary

Uganda’s tennis player loses to Indian Thakkar in Rwanda.

KAMPALA

Ugandan David Oringa has had a forgettable experience in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Futures circuit so far.

After being eliminated in his first match of the main draw in Burundi last week, Oringa was again at the losing end in the Rwanda circuit at the weekend. This time round, the Uganda Open winner was beaten in the qualifying round.

Despite a terrific start that saw him win the first set 6-4, Oringa was overpowered by Indian Rakshay Thakkar, going down 4-6 6-2 in the subsequent sets. He blamed his loss on a leg injury.

“I am happy to be playing well despite results not coming my way,” Oringa said after the match. “I injured my right leg in the second set while leading 4-3. I think I should have won,” he added. But with another circuit this weekend, Oringa believes he will recover in time and play better.

The loss to Thakkar means Oringa is yet to score points in the two Futures circuits (Burundi and Rwanda). In Burundi, Oringa beat American Dustin Goldenberg in the qualifiers but fell to another American Michael-Ray Pallares-Gonzalez in the main draw.
