Men's singles semifinal results
D. Habiyambere (RWA) bt D.Oringa 6-3 6-3
J. Claude Gasigwa (RWA) bt. D.Mugabe 6-4 8-7
For the first time in four years, the Uganda Open men’s singles final will be contested by foreign players only.
This comes after Uganda's top two hopefuls title holder David Oringa as well as two-time champion (2010 and 2011) Duncan Mugabe were eliminated by Rwandan opponents in the semifinals this morning. In front of partisan fans, defending champion Oringa suffered a straight sets 6-3 6-3 defeat under scorching heat to Dieudonne Habiyambere.
Another Rwandan Jean Claude Gasigwa needed less than two hours to stop Mugabe 6-4 8-7.
"He is a good player but I think I deserved it more," Gasigwa said.
Gasigwa plays Habiyambere in the final on Saturday morning for the trophy and Shs2.5m cash prize.
The losses brought out emotion from Oringa and Mugabe as both players threw away their rackets and left the courts desolate.
