KAMPALA
Ugandan tennis player David Oringa could have missed the Zambia Open last weekend but he is still hopeful of building a successful career. “I missed the trip to Zambia but I am now focused on playing professional tennis,” Oringa told Saturday Monitor on phone.
Currently training at the Sadili Academy in Nairobi, Kenya, Oringa will play in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Futures tournament at the Entetive Sportive courts in Burundi from November 9-19. “There is no room for error. I want to score points and join the professionals,” the 19-year-old said. “I need to be consistent. I am working on my movements on court and hitting the ball better,” Oringa added.
Qualifiers
He will start to play in qualifiers before contesting for the main trophy and 10,000 US dollars (Shs.25m) alongside 31 other players.
From Bujumbura, Oringa will head to Rwanda for another ITF Futures tourney from November 19-26. The teenager, fresh from secondary school (Kololo SS), won this year’s Uganda Open after defeating Rwandan Jean Claude Gasigwa at the Lugogo back in June.
Oringa was ousted by Rwandan Dieudonne Habiyambere 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at the quarterfinal stage of the Rwanda ITF/CAT Prize money circuit at the Umbano Hotel Courts last month.
