RESTAURANT REVIEW: Relax and savour

KABIRA COUNTRY CLUB. A place to relish food variety.

Kabira Country Club is the kind of place where one can easily fit in on a weekend or should I say anytime, wearing shorts or a mini skirt without the feeling of being out of place. Dresscode is strictly informal and given the fact that they have a swimming pool adjacent to the main dining area, this kind of sartorial attire is wholly acceptable and makes a lot of sense in our hot climate.

The featured genre of food is one I would term as being a three in one situation, with a café, a wide Continental menu as well Indian. Speaking with the Executive Chef Joshua who has been in situ for over six years as the in-charge, he assured us that they have on hand a vastly experienced team from several nationalities who can virtually prepare any kind of desired cuisine.

One of the all-time favourites at the club is the mixed grill. This is a gigantic meat platter comprising beef fillet steak, tenderloin of pork, chicken, sausage, bacon etc; one would do well to share it with another entrée such as the fabled butter chicken.
Also worth mentioning, is the generous whole grilled fish. Speaking of which, Joshua informed me that they would be happy to prepare it steamed in the Chinese mode or for that matter, even deep fried is an option.

For starters, I chose to have the barbecue satay of beef, chicken and pork and these were nicely decorated and garnished with avocado, tomato and yellow pepper and served with a tart and spiced dipping sauce. Fellow trencherman could not resist the classic Waldorf salad, a rare treat in these necks of the wood. And by the way, it had a generous sprinkling of pecan meats. This was followed with nyama pizza that comprises several meats of one’s choice. Not bad and certainly novel.

I then went for a fiery chicken curry served with garlic naan, white rice and raita with my only lamentation being that the curry was not ‘hot’ enough though this did not in any way diminish my appetite.

The Indian menu is not too crowded or complicated with the usual favourite runners from the sub continent such as chicken tikka or Rogan josh while the whole tandoori chicken remains a great item for sharing amongst friends. The desserts are limited but scrumptious.
