What you need to know:

  • HOT BITES RESTAURANT. Despite being an outdoor space with noisy drawbacks, the service is on point and menu fairly priced.

Over the past few years we have observed the trend of opening food joints within the proximity of gas stations and City Oil and Shell Uganda have been a huge proponent of this idea with the former having chalked up phenomenal success. With regards to the latter, I notice that Prunes Café have also decided to cast their net wider and they too have set up shop at the Shell Namirembe Road that happens to be across from City Oil Javas on the same route.
Farther up the road and staying within the same district, albeit Rubaga Road, I recently noticed a new kid on the block at Oryx fuel station. Hot Bites Restaurant. Despite being barely a month old, they seem to have their act together with a menu that is reasonably priced and attractive.

Strategic location
The location is on a busy thoroughfare and is bound to attract curious diners who get stuck in the gr id lock during the unavoidable rush hour. Parking is available and they are open daily including Sunday. The outdoor structure is semi-permanent with parasols that are permanently in place and offer perfect relief from the oppressive sunshine. As for rain, that is another matter altogether. Back to the menu. I love chicken wings and unlike in China and the Far East, where they are popular, here that is not the case.

Menu
Indeed, the crispy chicken wings lived up to our expectations and left me wishing for a second helping however at Shs12,000 a clip fat chance. The whole fish was out of stock and at a giveaway price of Shs15,000 I was not surprised. They also do burgers which are nothing to write home about and as for sandwiches; why only chicken remains a mystery. As long as there is bread having different fillings on hand would be cost effective and bound to appeal to customers who are not up to a meal and prefer a snack of that genre. Getting the food out of the kitchen can be daunting when they are busy and wisely the menu selection is limited.

Improve…
Being outdoors the grass beneath the tables needs to be trimmed; frankly it is an eyesore. The service is good and do inquire about their assorted milk shakes which I am told are just what the doctor ordered.
