Where to whet your buds

What you need to know:

At Kabira Country Club, food varieties leave you asking for more.

Kabira Country Club has all the amenities that one would expect of a club of its class in Uganda while at the same time membership is not exclusive only to staying guests. Similarly, the restaurant is open to anybody who has the bucks and can afford the damage without feeling a pinch. For that matter one can even pay for daily membership so as to take advantage of all the facilities such as the gym, swimming pool, and bridge.

What really impressed me during our last visit was the play area for toddlers. For a modest Shs25,000 per child, you and your spouse can spend quality leisure time with without fretting over children. This play area is part of Kabira management and there are two full- time minders to take care of the children.

Kabira County Club is definitely an upmarket establishment where prices are par for the course, while at the same time offering very good food. The restaurant offers a three- in-one situation with a café, a wide Continental menu as well Indian. No need to worry about whether contrasting schools of cooking work, given the very able and experienced chefs on hand, this combination works very well.

Irresistible menu
Seeing fresh Norwegian salmon on the menu, I was tempted to order it and given generally that it is the smoked variant that is to be found in places such as the Serena Kampala Hotel and such establishments, it was a rare treat. True that Shs 50,000 is not chump change, but if you like this type of delicacy, don’t hesitate.

The Indian menu is bountiful and very tasty with the usual favourite runners from the sub-continental such as chicken tikka or Rogan josh while the whole tandoori chicken is one that continues to get rave reviews from the dinners that go back to Kabira over and over. The desserts are limited but scrumptious. The Death by chocolate and tiramisu not to mention the apple pie were indeed wonderful and as for those portions, one word could best describe them; truly gargantuan.

What makes the Kabira Country Club menu such a gem is the fact that it is practical and workable (as many menus often wont to be) while at the same time the chefs have vast experience in cooking; this is very noticeable from the taste of the food. The service is good, the portions are generous and the choice of al fresco or otherwise is just what the doctor ordered. Last but not least is the children’s playground.
