We never got to know Chris Ireland for anything else but karaoke. He made it popular and as such turned places like Alleygators at Garden City, popular for karaoke sessions.
He went on to work for corporate companies but never let go of his career of doing cover renditions of big songs. Along the way, he got on a plane and headed home, to Australia. However something about loud and dusty Kampala kept him unsettled, he returned unannounced.
He worked at Broadband for a while before starting Code 9 band. It performed at a few places on a weekly, one of which was Cayenne Bar, Lounge and Restaurant in Bukoto. Ireland was hatching a plan to start a hangout.
His dream materialised into Jazz Ville, located on Bandali Rise, in Bugolobi.
Last Wednesday, Code 9 celebrated five years. It raised and lowered tempos with their originals, and popular covers, friends and fans sat back and took it in, occasionally clapping in excitement.
The band unveiled their latest album titled One more time, which Germany’s Ambassador to Uganda Peter Blomeyer, launched. He said when he had just come to this country, he asked around for a band that could perform at the Germany National Day. One band’s name kept coming up- Code 9. He hired the band and when it started played, the formal event turned otherwise. Everyone found themselves dancing and letting loose.
One more time is a beautiful love song with captivating lyrics and a cheeky music video that will tickle you all the way.
What is a party without cake? Cake was cut at 10:30pm, time when most guests had had dinner and in time to enjoy dessert. For a minute, the ambassador was hesitant to cut it because it was so beautiful.
Some musicians who have played with Code 9 were in the house. Fans kept shouting their names and they obliged by going on stage and playing a tune or two. The night ended on a high.
