The evening drizzle did not stop hundreds of people from heading to Kanginima Primary School playground in Pallisa for a gospel music and drama concert organised by Pastor Betty Badda of Jesus Liberty Church in Kampala. Fans came from as far as Kumi, Mbale, Budaka, Kibuku districts to be part of the gospel music fete at the weekend.

At 9pm, Pr Badda and her choir dressed in yellow outfits jumped onto stage to perform her songs Dauda, Dagola and others amid loud cheers from the crowd that was singing along. The singing pastor took the audience on a journey of gospel music since Uganda attained its Independence 52 years ago.

“I am happy to be home. I am comforted by the support you have shown me. I now know you love me,” Badda said to the cheering crowd. The other gospel artistes included Sam Senyonjo, Michael Musalu and comedians.

The concert started at 5pm with praise songs and performances from upcoming gospel artistes. Badda said the concert was a way to give back to all God loving people in Pallisa District. As the crowd begged her to continue the performance after 11pm, the pastor went on her knees and pleaded with the unforgiving audience to let her end the performance.

Comedians were also there to crack fans’ ribs but also to educate them on the dangers of HIV/Aids. Their play What next depicted how ignorance is the main driver for the prevalence of HIV/Aids among rural women. It highlighted the need to trust in God. The show proved Pastor Badda’s strong local support in eastern region and it highlighted the fact that upcountry shows can be a success.
