When singer Irene Ntale announced that she would hold her concert on the same day as comedian Salvador’s Africa Laughs, many thought she was joking. During the week leading to her ‘Date Night - Sembera’ concert at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, Ntale told Daily Monitor, these were two different events –a musical concert and comedy show – which would definitely attract different people.
Indeed Ntale’s fans came in droves despite the drizzle which threatened to spoil the party.
By 8pm, the sound system provided by Vibes Production was already set. Short video clips of friends giving Ntale advice and encouragement on the giant screens only made revelers angry.
Around 9.30pm, the woman of the moment came on stage, unannounced and started her show with Kabugo, a song she did way back in 2014. The singer continued performing songs, some of them unknown. This did not stop her adoring fans from dancing.
She then invited Rema Namakula and together, they performed Lean on Me, a song she said was one of her favourites. Bebe Cool with whom they recorded Love Letter also joined her on stage for the duet. She later got hold of her guitar, sat on a stool and started playing and singing covers from some of her favourite local artistes.
Ntale sang Jose Chameleone’s Valu Valu, Kabuye Semboga’s Ebisaanyi, Coco Finger’s My Miss and Julianna Kanyomozi’s Nabikoowa among others. With 10 minutes to midnight, Ntale invited the duo of Radio and Weasel to perform Bikoola and then closed the show with Sembera.
