The annual traditional dance showcase, Chibuku set new records this year. The national finals roared into life last weekend with most of the best cultural dancers, and some of last year’s winners tussling it out for the grand prize.
The competition, which took place at Nateete Taxi Park, saw last year’s overall winners, Back to the Roots Cultural Troupe, coming in second position.
There were a variety of dances that were performed. In the end, Zivuga Cultural Troupe emerged winners. Back to the Roots put up a great performance but so did Zivuga.
The latter performed the Bakisimba Nankasa Mawogola dance, they had the energy, they knew how to use stage props.
Unlike other regions, it was only in Lubaga Division where every group that came in understood the rules and regulations that guide the competitions.
No group mimed any song, they all had full costumes.
The winners walked away with cash prize of Shs300,000 and a set of bikooyi (dancing costumes). The second group took home Shs200,000 and dancing costumes as well.
Central region, Mbarara and Nakawa are the regions remaining to be represented at the grand finale. The climax will be at National Theatre on October 30.
Last year’s inaugural competition was only for Kampala-based troupes. It has been spread to include Jinja, Mbale, Masaka and Mbarara.

About Chibuku
Last year, Nile Breweries, through their Chibuku brand, introduced a new phenomenon to music competitions in the country when they launched the Chibuku Shake-Shake dance competitions.
The groups are judged along the same parameters; creativity, design, choreography and originality.
The contest has traditional groups competing in various dances.
