A hair affair
Whether it is dyed hair weaves or intricately braided ones Lillian Kyabaki and Brenda Nanyonjo of House of Zarian manage to play around with them on different outfits to produce beautifully odd designs. It is not like we have not seen crazy things done with hair on the catwalk. Actually designers seem to be in a never ending competition to present their collections on models with the most outrageous hairstyles. What we have not seen is hair worn as clothes, or rather clothes made of hair.
Presented at the launch of Miss Uganda 2013 search, the clothes were part of house of Zarians showcase. House of Zarian is responsible for the playful bright dresses that Miss Uganda contestants have been appearing on stage in for the past two years.
The collection
This hair collection featured corsets decorated with braided pieces, cat suits with hair providing the neckline detail and full on dresses made from nothing but hair.
Brenda Nanyonjo, who with Lillian Kyabaki, is behind the house of Zarian line has a story about how the hair idea came along, “We wanted to make a glam collection, a line of black clothes with metal and stars.” It was while working on this that that the idea to use hair occurred to the two and in two hours they were sewing hairpieces on a dress. The full on collection was made possible by Darling, who provided hairpieces of different colours and textures for free after seeing the sketches.
So where do you wear these hair clothes? According to Nanyonjo, “It is haute couture. To be worn on stage and at costume parties. Not practical off the stage!” Still, we can ogle.
