Make up that will make you look older

In Summary

Of all the things women turn to make up for, looking older is none of them. So, unless you are making up for Halloween, Body Care Centre’s Maureen Nabbanja, and Scent Heaven’s Doreen Nabunya, both beauticians, share with Carol Nambowa about how not to age with makeup

Foundation
Getting the wrong shade or tone of foundation can be scandalous. Women have a habit of buying foundation that will make them look lighter than they really are not knowing that powder foundation not only makes the skin look pale and dusty but also settles in the creases and lines that one intends to hide’ says Nabunya.

Tip: Choose foundation that matches your neck, not the face. Choose light weight liquid foundation over powder foundation too, especially for the day. Also the more skin people can see and the less makeup the better. Use it to enhance your well-taken-care-of skin, not cover it up.

Powder
Trying to get rid of all the shine by applying a lot of powder leaves the face dusty, flaky and scaly without a natural glow.
Tip: Apply powder sparingly, and to a moisturised skin.

Eye shadow
Applying eye shadow on a greasy or oily skin causes the eye lids to look creased, less taut an aspect associated with old. Applying large amounts of shimmer to the eyes makes one look ridiculous.
Tip: Apply eye shadow to dry eye lids.

Eye liner
Applying dark liner around small eyes makes the eyes look smaller, giving off a diminishing aged look.
Tip: For small eyes especially, apply eye liner to the top lid and corners of the eye to give it a lifted look instead. Avoid heavy liner on the bottom eye lid.

Mascara
Applying several layers of mascara over already dried mascara clamps the eye lashes and at times causes smudges making the lashes look small, like old age is eating them away.
Tip: To have heavy looking eye lashes, one should apply water proof mascara that is gentle on the lashes.

Blush
When applied in large amounts, blush defines the lines on the face instead of giving the cheeks a youthful look. Also, cheeks look sunken with dull colours of blush.
Tip: Go for a cream blush and distribute it evenly on the cheek bones with the fingers or a make-up blush. Apply colours that make the face standout giving it a vibrant look.

Lipstick
One’s lips shrink with age, and dark colours only make them appear more petite.
Tip: Wear bright colours of lipstick and gloss that not only makes the lips standout but also gives them a look of fullness.

Poor hairstyle choice
Your hairstyle can be a huge boost to your beauty, or an unfortunate detriment to your beauty. As you get older and want to continue looking young, a long and flat hair style will not work as well as it did in your youth. Long, flat hair exaggerates the look of a droopier, older face without bringing out the good in your face.

Making up the lower eye and lashes
As you get older, to make yourself look younger you need to stop using mascara and eyeliner on the lower area of your eye. This only brings attention to the dark circles and other effects of aging instead of making your eyes look more beautiful. Also, keep the eyeliner off the lower part of the eye, it does the same.

Shinier eye shadow
Shiny and shimmering eye shadow might look great and be popular but it is going to show signs of aging more than other forms of eye shadow. The area where you apply eye shadow lacks oil glands and that means the eyes are the area to show aging first. Creases and cracks in the skin will be exemplified with the use of shinier eye shadow as opposed to matte colours.
