In Summary

Under wear. If you have walked into a lingerie shop lately, then you will agree that it is no longer just a practical support affair. Lingerie has evolved to include pieces so pretty you are tempted to wear them over your blouse for the bras, writes Christine Wanjiru Wanjala

Lingerie is no longer just about getting something to wear under your clothes. Gosh; some of the contraptions outside there do not look anything more than a series of strings that barely cover your modesty.

Then, there is that specific outfit we wear, from strapless for the off shoulder dresses to the seamless knickers and thongs to keep the panty line out of sight. A quick survey at the lingerie shop proves one thing, aside from the practical, lingerie is about seduction. From night gowns to panties, lace seems to be having a big, moment as trim and even making a whole outfit. Sheer Polyester comes in second and satin mixed with Lycra comes is a favourite for the body shapers and control underwear.

It is safe to conclude that women are spoilt for choice. Which is why a few tips would be really useful when picking lingerie? Here are the basics to help you along.

Comfort is key
Lingerie is closest to your body, foundation garments as they say. For this reason how you feel in it matters. Ill-fitting panties or bra could very easily ruin your day. Cindy Kemigisha of De la diva collections who recently showcased her lingerie and beach wear line tips: “The wrong panty fabric or fit can keep you shifting uncomfortably all day.”

It can make or break your outfit or confidence
The underwear you choose for a day can even determine how much confidence you have, sometimes even your clothes choice. We all know unsightly panty lines can kill even the best outfit.

To feel good, wear what looks good
That no one is seeing your lingerie is not an excuse. Invest in matching, quality pieces in varying styles and colours. It gives you a nice feeling to know you are smart from the inside. Kemigisha says you can even spice your lingerie drawer up as long as you keep it practical for everyday wear.
