To marry a prince, you must get rid of the frog

You kiss a lot of frogs before you meet a prince is an adage mainly used to console those who have been heartbroken, but at the weekend, the entire world witnessed a fairytale come to life as an American actress Meghan Markle married a prince, a true prince.

When rumours of their engagement flared in the media, her past had to come to life in an effort to discredit her. They gave reasons as to why she could not be the one to marry the prince but never joke with fate; it stepped in real hard until the ‘wicked stepmothers’ swallowed their own words.

Among the dirt that was dug was the fact that she is divorced. Meghan divorced her first husband Trevor Engelson in 2013 and we all know that by the time two people who happily walked down the aisle go to court for divorce, something somewhere went wrong. I guess one day as she was weeping over her failed marriage, the royal bird came and whispered words of hope. She decided to end it and concentrate on her career.

Imagine if she had not walked away from the ‘frog’, she would have been among the billions of people to watch Prince Harry wed but she faced her fears head on and decided to walk away from an unhappy marriage.

Divorce is not something we embrace in the African culture and this has suffocated many. Most of them are afraid to walk away from that abusive husband who has bruised her face, esteem and broken every bit of their vows. Most women have given up on a fight for their happiness because they fear another woman might come and take on what she has worked so hard to build.

A man impregnates a mistress and instead of him apologising, the clan blames her for not ‘satisfying’ him. Other women stay in bad marriages claiming that they are protecting their children’s ‘inheritance’. Is there a solution to a bad marriage? If there is, try it but if you have prayed, gone for counselling and done everything right and still he treats you like property, my sister; it is time to wake up.

Maybe you will not end up with a prince like Meghan but someone else might be your ‘Prince Charming’ waiting to sweep you off the ground in another episode of ‘Cinderella Story’ and if you never meet him, leave happily ever after just by yourself. Happiness is a personal choice.
