Love doesn’t ask why. But why not?

What you need to know:

  • A couple is supposed to compromise, adjust and communicate but if being faithful and communicating with your partner is hard, then you are bound to cause heartache.

There are sayings that should never be taken as gospel truth. Imagine someone doing something wrong and when you ask them why, they are quick to remind you that “love doesn’t ask why”.

I think such people take relationships for granted. A couple is supposed to compromise, adjust and communicate but if being faithful and communicating with your partner is hard, then you are bound to cause heartache.

Sandra has been married to Tom for more than six years. They have three children together, a boy and two girls. Sandra got a scholarship to study abroad for two years. While at school, she communicated with her husband and children every time she could.

After sometime, she could hardly reach him, she always called home to Skype with her children but her husband always said he was busy. After graduation, since her communication with the husband was rocky, she decided to return without alerting him.

When she got home, she found that her faithful maid was pregnant and her behaviour had changed. She sat in the chair and kept flipping through TV channels. Sandra’s room was locked so she just sat there looking at the maid. “Who is the father of your baby?” she asked suspiciously. The young girl just rolled her eyes and walked away. To Sandra’s shock, the maid did not head to her room, she instead went to what used to be Sandra’s matrimonial bedroom, closed the door behind her and turned up the volume of the radio.

Sandra panicked; she tried not to think of the worst but couldn’t stop herself. She rushed to pick her children from school but they were doing exams so she decided to pay Tom a visit at his office to calm her nerves.
On arrival, she sat in the parking lot for more than two hours wondering how to ask him about the maid. Instead, she just sat there and cried. A knock on her window almost gave her a heart attack. It was Tom. “What are you doing here?” he asked.

When she saw him, she just drove off. Tom tried to follow but lost her at the traffic lights. Sandra just drove straight to her aunt’s home. She did not say a word to her. Her aunt sat her down. “My daughter, what happened?” She did not know what to say so she just played dumb until her aunt gave up.

The following morning, Tom showed up at her aunt’s house with a sack of rice, sugar and boxes of soap. Sandra’s aunt woke her up with a counselling session.

“My daughter, marriage is full of challenges, and whatever happened between the two of you; you have to sort it out. If you really love him, do not question his judgement. He is a man and true love doesn’t ask why…”
“Why shouldn’t it?” Sandra asked her aunt.
“It is because we love with the heart not the mind,” Her aunt replied.
“So should I just sit around as he breaks my heart?”
“Time heals everything my daughter; always solve relationship matters with the heart not the mind.”
For a week now, Sandra is still trying to forget what happened between her husband and the maid but how can she? She has a million questions but is also trying to follow her aunt’s advice.
