She rejected me, kept away her friend

What you need to know:

I called Stella. She did not answer. I kept calling every 10 minutes until she answered. Then I told her about Grace’s phone call. Stella went quiet, then said, “I told Grace about you, I wanted to be sure there was nothing going on between you and her. She is like that.” I asked her what she meant by, “Grace is like that.” She said, “Grace hates it when her friends date men who have hit on her, even if she is not interested in them. She still considers them her men, she looks at it as betrayal”.

I met Stella after I had met Grace. Stella was Grace’s friend, and where she lacked in looks, she more than made up for it in being good company. Since Grace had shown extreme disinterest in my advances, I shifted my attention to Stella and did not beat about the bush. Stella refused to entertain me out of loyalty to her friend.

But I patiently explained that Grace was not interested in me at all, so that should not be the reason Grace uses for turning me down. I told her to make her decision not based on what had or had not happened between Stella and I. She looked at me as if I was trying to pull a quick one on her, and walked off.
The next day, Grace called me. Grace had never called me in the four months I had tried to woo her, but here she was calling now. I knew this had something to do with Stella. I had half a mind not to answer, but I answered.

Ridiculous warning
She cut straight to the chase; “leave Stella alone”. Astounded, I asked her why. She went silent for a few seconds, decided it was not worth her time to explain to me whatever crazy logic was going through her head, and telling me again to stay away from Stella, she hang up.
Now this was utter nonsense in my world; if Stella wanted me to leave her alone, she could very well do it herself, she was not a child and Grace was not her keeper. And what had Grace to do with anything at all?
I called Stella. She did not answer. I kept calling every 10 minutes until she answered. Then I told her about Grace’s phone call. Stella went quiet, then said, “I told Grace about you, I wanted to be sure there was nothing going on between you and her. She is like that.”

I asked her what she meant by, “Grace is like that.” She said, “Grace hates it when her friends date men who have hit on her, even if she is not interested in them. She still considers them her men, she looks at it as betrayal”.
I laughed because the whole thing sounded simply ridiculous. So I asked Stella if she would like us to meet for coffee later on. She was silent for a few minutes, then said, ‘yeah that would be great’.
And so we started our relationship behind Grace’s back. I did not care if she found out, but Stella apparently had loyalty issues, and it caused her endless guilt. Yet when I asked her if she felt what she was doing was wrong, she replied, ‘no, it is not wrong, but you know how people are. I do not want to have Grace beefing on me ‘mbu’ I stole her man and telling everyone how I am a man snatcher’.

I brushed it off, thinking that surely someone like Grace was above such petty business. But I was too hasty in being generous with Grace because no sooner had I said she would do no such thing than she posted on her Facebook page hitting a some person who ‘claims to be a friend, but sees nothing wrong with taking other people’s property’. So I was now property, huh! Stella immediately called me telling me that Grace was on the war path. By that time, she had added another post, saying, “and they show no shame, they who steal other people’s men. So much for friends.”

I told Stella she did not need such people as her friends, they were just selfish people. But Stella would not give in, she did not want to lose her childhood friend. In a moment of frustration, I called Grace and asked her what she wanted. And her answer literally run me speechless. She said: “People like you should stay away from me and my friends. You are not good enough, you friend-swapping pig.” Okay, I do not even know what ‘friend-swapping’ even means, or if the word even exists.
