Irresistible ambiance and menu

What you need to know:

FOR TASTE. One place to feel non-discriminated against at Prunes Restaurant and Café in Kololo

For many of us who are ardent fans of this rare gem of an eatery, it came as no great surprise for them to be declared one of the four winners in the recently concluded second Kampala Food Festival Week that ended last month. Out of 40 contestants, Prunes was declared the winner in the casual category.

Casual or not
Either way Prunes is a winner. I suppose that by casual they are referring to an informal menu as opposed to say a classic three-course meal that would take in a starter, main course and a dessert. Of course such a setting would also assume a greater air of formality and maybe civility in matters pertaining to sartorial wear. Jeans, shorts, hot pants whatever you choose to wear; Prunes is never discriminating.
Now into their fourth year, Prunes continues to be innovative and forward thinking with their latest creation being the Lebanese Saj which is an ancient method of cooking unleavened bread over a metal griddle that is curved like a wok (albeit in a convex fashion)and manages to distribute heat evenly on the surface. As the bread is cooked, one can add items on the surface such as ham, cheese, and anything else that one may fancy while also having the liberty of creating different flavors, nutella a chocolate flavour being one of them.

In terms of location
Prunes location and being in Kololo, is prime and pristine while the town house they occupy, the downstairs (indoors) has an informal and quaint dining area that boasts of a high ceiling and mahogany shelves. Prunes has great character and a superb and diversified menu that not only reads tantalizingly well but offers sublime tasting pleasure and presentation.
Over time the Saturday/Sunday brunch has become a favourite for many where one has sweet or savoury with an array of seasonal fruits, homemade yoghurt, a choice of granola chunks with a choice of dairy milk or even soya milk. Poached eggs or easy over or scrambled or whatever style you may choose or with English muffins and all three toppings of your choice.
The service is efficient and friendly while the food is first rate and well-priced with very generous portions.
