Kibuye’s church opens doors

A new church, St Agnes Catholic Church, is set to be officially opened today at Kibuye in Makindye.

According to the Parish Priest ,Rev Fr Joseph Lugobe, the newly built church is to be officially opened by the Archbishop of Kampala Diocese, Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.

The church, which has a seating capacity of about 800 is to replace the old one which had become very small for the worshippers due to the increasing population of the Catholics in the area.

“The old church had become too small to accommodate all the worshippers. Many people who come for Sunday prayers normally pray from outside the church which affects their concentration when the church service is going on,” Fr Lugobe says.

Sam Nabwiiso, the St Agnes Catholic Church publicity secretary, says the construction of the church has been largely funded by fellow Catholics and well-wishers from government and other organisations.

“Since the ground breaking ceremony in 2008, we have been looking for funds from church members and the entire Catholic fraternity through Sunday collections, fundraising dinners, charity walks and well-wishers such as the former prime minister Amama Mbabazi who contributed Shs10m towards the project,” Nabwiiso says.

Vice president Edward Ssekandi also donated Shs2m. As part of the activities to open the church, the archbishop will also wed 19 couples.

What believers say about the church

“ It is a milestone to have this church completed because the old one which we have been using was designed for sub parish level. But when the sub parish level was elevated to a parish, there was increase in the population of worshippers and we are sure that the new church will be able to accommodate 800 people.

“ The new church will attract more youth to come back to our church because some youth have been praying from other good churches such as Christ the King and St Peter’s Church Nsambya. I also thank those people who contributed towards the construction of our new church. I pray that God rewards them abundantly.
