In Summary

Music. In 2010, Oscar and friends, a concert aimed at raising funds for rehabilitation of Jjanyi Primary School in Kajjansi was a success. This year, chapter two of the charity concert resumes with the releasing of an eight-track album.

It would be hard to find an obvious answer if someone asked you what law and music can have in common. But put Oscar Kihika in the equation and it quickly begins to make sense. From the time the former President of Uganda Law Society fell in love with music at the age of four, not even a successful law career has stood in the way of his passion. With the flavour of charity added to it, Kihika has yet again embarked on his star studded Oscar and Friends concert at the Kampala Serena Hotel on April 20, where he will out his latest eight track album The Journey.

The concert, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Kampala South is a sequel to the 2010 Oscar and Friends – concert which raised funds and support for rehabilitation of Jjanyi Primary School in Kajjansi.

His contemporary African Jazz collection is sweet on the ear with the tune Nile Serenade a favourite. Sweet Memory and Girl are also quite impressive as is the signature tune The Journey. Of the eight tracks, five are complete and three are in their final stages. While the genre is not unique, the passion Kihika brings forth can be felt.

His prowess in playing a variety of instruments like drums, rhythm guitar, drums, keyboard and a xylophone goes a long way to create a master piece. He possesses a rare sensibility which allows him to interpret diverse styles with equal authenticity and yet his jazz improvisational style remains impressive.

This year’s concert will feature Jackie Chandiru, Suzan Kerunen and Benon and raise funds to build more classroom blocks for Jjanyi Primary School. Silk Events, Orange Uganda, SMS media, Nile Gold and Serena Hotel have partnered with the artistes in the hope of pushing the agenda of vulnerable children to the front through music.
