Arrow, a capped hero show full of promise

For those familiar with Smallville, you might remember a recurring character in the series called the Green Arrow. This DC comics character takes centre stage as the spot light is shifted on him. Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) was born with a diamond spoon in his mouth and excess was the norm of his life.

During an expedition in the middle of the sea with his father, misfortune befalls all the persons aboard the ship, which capsises. He manages to escape but he is left to fend for himself on a deserted island for five years. Upon his rescue, he returns to Starling City a reformed individual with a new mission for his life, a far cry from his previous bad boy persona.

A new purpose
He takes on the role of a vigilante who transverses the night skies in the city seeking to rewrite the misdeeds of his family as he promised his dying father. With enormous wealth at his disposal and a unique skill set, Queentakes up the role of the Green Arrow, whose intention is to take down the criminal underworld that runs Starling City.

Our main character also has to contend with the efforts of Detective Quentin Lance, who is out to get him. Lance is also the father of his love interest, Laurel, a lawyer who is determined to fight for the underdog.

The show has a lot of potential but exhibits occasional lapses in terms of consistency. The writing is clearly good with solid delivery but at times the series seems to want to take you down an emotional roller-coaster that is less than thrilling and at worst not very convincing. If only the writers could stick to the business end of things with a hard fighting, ruthless vigilante out to set things right, the this show would totally be out of this world.
