While I wait for the harvest…

The school term has started so we are back to early mornings. The girls had become used to sleeping till about 8am although the older one is an early riser and is usually up by 6am.

Nevertheless, it is easy to wake up at 6am when you have all day to play in the holiday time and two hours to nap in the afternoon.

Things get a little trickier when you have to be in school by 7.30am, study hard, play hard, swim on some days, fight with friends over this and that, and get stuck on the way home every once in a while because the school van broke down.

At that point, 6am is rather difficult to face. But we are getting on. What I am secretly dreading is the homework during the week.

For the first week, the older girl does not bring homework and can play as much as she likes in the evenings.

But once we get into the second week, which is this week, then homework becomes the double edged sword. Either we are fighting about it or having fun learning new things.

Her younger sister dreams of getting homework every day. She only gets homework on Friday for the weekend. I keep telling her to enjoy it while it lasts. She does not understand what I mean but I tell her nevertheless.

In other news, the chicken have grown. They look almost scary. They are that huge. The feed that lasted almost one and a half months now gets finished in two weeks! We are preparing to feast on one sometime soon. However, eggs first.

We are eagerly waiting for the layers to give us a few eggs. The other day I was terribly amused when I saw how much the girls had influenced the maid.

Whenever it is feeding time, the girls greet the birds and ask them how their night was.

And in the evening when they are done with playing outside, they bid them goodnight. The maid does it too now, seriously. Which is why it is so funny to hear. She has proper conversations with them, asking how their night was, if they are hungry and if they would like a little change in diet.

When the rains come our gardens smile. The beans, greens, maize and onions are thriving, growing really fast. We are also seeing beautiful scented flowers coming up.

My only worry is the avocado, orange and mango trees. They are taking too long to put on fruit, in my opinion. If only the avocado and orange trees would do so, it would save us so much money.

Nevertheless, there is a lot to be thankful for so I shall just wait for the harvest of the rest and enjoy it with my family.
