Habits that ruin your skin

The skin is a delicate part of the body. Although there are people who keep doing things they have no idea are damaging the skin, others are very keen on ensuring they have the best skin always.
They drink water and cleanse their skin, among others. However, there are some bad habits generally known to ruin the skin.

Smoking: Many people do not know this or may not bother but smoking is not only harmful to one’s lungs but is also very bad for their skin. It accelerates the aging process and hence your face will have wrinkles, brown spots, and fine lines at an early age.

“The nicotine is so toxic in that it does not help in the skin structure leading to wrinkles and early aging,” says Dr Edward Ogwang, a dermatologist at Skin Specialist Clinic in Wandegeya in Kampala.

Dr Ogwang adds that smoking will even delay the repairing process of your skin as it reduces the flow of blood to the skin. The skin specialist also says staying for long periods under the sun is harmful to the skin especially to people of light skin complexion.

“People who are light skinned should not be exposed to too much sun rays because their complexion is fragile to too much radiation. Besides sunburns, the radiation can also cause skin cancer,” he says.

Sleeping with makeup: On many occasions after a long day, some women forget to wash off their makeup before going to bed. What does this mean?

Not washing off makeup can lead to clogged pores and can even cause spots and damage skin. This is due to the body temperature which increases slightly during which the skin absorbs whatever is on the surface at a rapid rate.

Use of wrong beauty products: Often people make a mistake of picking up wrong makeup products. If done, the wrong products may damage your skin by causing pores, cracking the skin and leading to diseases such as cancer or even damaging your skin beyond repair.
This is one reason experts always recommend buying products according to your skin type.
If you are not aware of your skin type or have some confusion regarding the products you use, then you must consult a beautician to get right answers.
Bursting pimples: This is the most common behaviour in people. It has always been advised never to prick or burst pimples unless it is done by a professional but people neglect that advice.

Skin specialists (dermatologists) know more about the skin and how to tackle such issues but when done by individuals or an inexperienced person, it can cause an infection and if it goes deeper, a major backfire can permanently enlarge pores leading to other diseases.
