Celeste and Jesse forever; love on the rocks

This is an engaging romantic comedy on love, marriage and never wanting to let go. The movie is set in uptown Los Angeles and follows the whims of a young trendy married couple played by Rashida Jones as Celeste and Andy Samberg as Jesse.

This rather unconventional couple have been together since high school and they also happen to double as best friends who seem to share everything from sense of humour, love of foreign accents and even close friends. Although caught up in the middle of a divorce, their separation seems to be amicable.

They still seem to do everything together and Jesse still stays in the backyard studio. Celeste is an ambitious successful trend forecaster while Jesse is a laid back graphic designer who is waiting for his life to begin. Despite the disparity in character they seem to share something special to which no one else in the world is invited.

The fact that they get along despite them having split up makes for a pivotal scene in the film when one of their friends who terms it as freaky walks out on them during a dinner party because she could not stomach the awkwardness any longer. Don’t be fooled by the title this is not your stereotypical romantic comedy full of clichés and unfunny people.

This comedy seems to have a little depth in its rather mind joggling take on serious relationships. The movie also has a strong supporting cast of the likes of Elijah Wood (Lord of the rings)as Celeste’s workmate and gay close friend, while Emma Roberts plays the annoying pop star that Celeste has to market.

The movie runs on the premise that marriage is hard, while letting go and moving from the familiar is even harder. The movie takes you on a journey of self-discovery for the lead actors who have to figure the directions their lives will take without them not being at the centre of each other’s lives.

This movie written by one of the leads Rashida Jones, seems to divide opinions because while some critics found it dragging, others like me found it rather engaging especially since it bears a close resemblance to real life. For a first time script,Jones exceeds my expectations and one can only hope that she only gets better.
