After the last season of The Vampire Diaries, Julie Plec felt that it was too big a story for one basket. So she created The Originals that is fast gaining popularity among her fans after a few episodes. The series is a spin-off from The Vampire Diaries, focusing on the original family of Mikaelson. It was released this month.
Set in New Orleans, The Originals centres on the Mikaelson siblings, otherwise known as the world’s original vampires: Klaus (Morgan), Elijah (Gillies), and Rebekah (Claire Holt). Klaus must take down his protégé, Marcel (Charles Michael Davis), who is now in charge of New Orleans, in order to re-take his city, as he originally built New Orleans. The Mikaelson siblings were forced to flee the city after being chased out by their father Mikael, while it was being constructed and Marcel took charge. Upon their return, Klaus has but one burning desire; to reclaim New Orleans.
Plucking this series from its roots raised concerns of it losing meaning but that is barely the case. All characters maintain their personalities. Rebekah is still indifferent to brutality, Elijah is still the honourable vampire hoping to hold the family together and Nicklaus maintains his ‘bad-boy’ act, hiding loneliness in cruelty.
