I dreamt about Copenhagen

What you need to know:

Everyone has a dream destination. Pauline Bangirana shares one of a kind.

“Welcome our dear customers to Copenhagen, Denmark and thank you for travelling with us. Please enjoy your stay in this beautiful place,” The hostess said as we were about to land. I was awakened by a tap from my neighbour who was telling me that it was time for us to get off the plane. I stood up and as I wiped my face, I could not believe my eyes.

The breeze was fresh and way different from what you feel in Kampala. (The Nothing close to the fumes from old cars on the small roads mixed with food aromas) this was clean air and immaculate looking walkways.

The family I was going to stay with was at the arrival lounge. They were amazed by my skin colour and for once I felt too much attention and like a tourist attraction.

However, my focus was on this city that I was yet to tour during my week’s stay. During our one-hour drive, I imagined myself abandoned in the city centre but I believe, with the many sign posts, I could find my way home comfortably. The city is very calm and the people there too are friendly but above all, their food was palatable.

Arrived at new home
I was shown around the immaculate white-walled house. We started with my bedroom with a sizeable bed neatly laid. Due to exhaustion, I could not move around for long. I took a bath and had dinner.

I was really excited because this was my first night away from home except for the countless times I would be joining secondary school and reporting for a new term but all the same, I was near home- Uganda. But here I was thousands of miles away from biological family in a home of strangers.

Day out in the city
The first day my breakfast was a normal meal which I did not find weird by the way, except for the names which I honestly do not remember. After my breakfast, I was given a tour to the city and to my amazement, all I could see was people riding bicycles all over the city. The cars were countable on the street. But the bicycles are so numerous and yet, it is still organised.

People are sticklers for time much as they prefer public transport such as double decker buses and the trains plus the ships. I missed the train a couple of times because I could not keep time and I had to learn the hard way to use a bike.

Fortunately, I did not fall off but it was challenging for me since I got some muscle aches at the end of the day. But they were worth it.

I do not remember much about the meals I had because they were so foreign for instance unpeeled baked Irish potatoes. I did eat anyway. The pork was delicious but my home made pork is better. The rest is history as I cannot really find the right words to describe how I felt while in the beautiful Denmark because even to date, I still cannot come to terms with the fact that I travelled to Denmark.

Well, it could not be a worthwhile trip if I do not mention my visit to the famous Tivoli Park. It was marvelous and cannot compare to Wonderworld Amusement Park in Kansanga.

If only all this were real, I would tell more stories. But wait, it is my dream destination and I know that the dream day will be hard to imagine that I will have to be pinched a million times to come back to the real world- in a plane to Denmark.
