MUKONO

The Rotary Club of Kampala has began the construction of a Shs2 billion hospital in Mukono District. The hospital will be constructed on a 10-acre piece of land at Ngandu, Mukono on Jinja Road.

Mr David Kasingwire, the president of the Rotary Club of Kampala, said the initiative is aimed at enhancing health services. “The project envisages a fully-fledged modern hospital with outpatients department, administration block and private clinic, specialised clinics, operating theatre, female, male and children wards. The overall strategy will be to build the hospital in phases with the first phase being focused on outpatients unit,” said Mr Kasingwire during the ground breaking ceremony at the weekend.

Health camp
At least 620 people received free treatment at a medical camp during the same function. Bank of Uganda Governor Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile described the initiative as historic, saying the facility would address the increasing health needs resulting from the rising population.

“It is gratifying for the Rotarians responding to such a need as they are known to fight against diseases and promoting timely interventions in the less fortunate communities. This (project) calls for vigilance and people to work diligently and consistently to realise the dream of the hospital,” Mr Mutebile, who contributed Shs20 million towards the project, said.

Mr Jimmy Serugo, the club’s director of international services and projects, said Rotary member George Mukasa Kasedde donated the land where the hospital will be constructed. “It is about having a heart for others, sharing the pain of the communities around you and choosing to do something about it in order to improve the lives of those less fortunate than you,” he added.
