Are wider tyres better than narrow ones?

Hello Paul, I am considering upgrading tyres on my Land Rover Discovery from size 205 to the wider size 255. Are wider tyres better than the original narrower ones? Kibuuka

Hello Kibuuka, the wider tyres (size 255) usually come with larger rims and lower side walls than the alternatives (size 205). Wider tyres are better for high speed performance driving because of improved handling. Their design and wider profile enhances cornering capability due to a firmer, less bouncy grip. Wider tyres and rims allow car manufacturers to fit bigger high performance brake discs and calipers for more efficient braking.

Wider tyres and rims give your car a bolder and better look. Like everything else, there are pros and cons when you switch to wider tyres. They are more costly and the conversion from narrower tyres may require a replacement of the rims too. Wider low profile tyres have shorter side walls which tend to make them less comfortable to ride on.

Tyres with lower side walls are usually not recommended for carrying cargo or full weight. When driving on low profile tyres, it is easier to damage the sidewalls or rims when you hit sharp edged pot holes or road side kerbs. Nevertheless, if your motivation to switch to wider tyres is performance and safety, go for the wider tyres.
