What causes wobbly wheels?

Hello Paul, I drive a Subaru Forester 2005 it has gradually developed wobbling of front wheels when I drive fast. I have checked for loose wheel nuts and taken it for wheel alignment twice as recommended but problem persists. What could be the cause? Nickson Mugisha

Hello Nickson, faulty wheel alignment does not cause wheel wobble. When your car wheels are misaligned it will have one or all of these symptoms: pulling to the left or right, uneven tyre wear, wheels will squeal when you turn and your steering will not be centred when you are driving in a straight line.

In extreme cases the steering will shake at speeds above 70 KPH. Wheel wobble is the oscillation of the car wheels as it drives in a non unilateral way. This is usually caused by worn out ball joints, wheel hub bearings, tie rod ends and severely damaged drive shafts.

The wobbling experience is pronounced when you are driving over humps or a bumpy terrain and driving through a corner or round about.
