Why engine sputters and stops intermittently

A 2004 Honda CRV .

What you need to know:

I drive a 2004 Honda CRV which has been okay for eight months since I bought it. However, two weeks ago it started sputtering and stopping, especially when idling in traffic jam and cuts power now and again when I try to overtake. We have replaced the pricy fuel filter, spark plugs and air cleaner. I need a second opinion before I give up.

Hello Esther, it seems your Honda has a fuel pressure problem, which could be compounded by a dirty air intake system particularly the throttle body. To rule out any engine management faults, run a computer diagnosis. Ask your mechanics if they can carry out a fuel pressure test using a fuel pressure test gauge.

A good diagnostic tool can show actual fuel pressure values and the values seen can be compared with Honda’s specified values for your engine. If fuel pressure passes or checks out fine.

You will need to examine the fuel injectors in case they are clogged or dirty. These can be actuated and tested using a suitable diagnostic tool to rule out mechanical or electrical failure.

If the fuel injectors are just dirty, they can be removed and cleaned with WD 40. Check the throttle valve in the intake system for possible restricted movement due to a dirty throttle valve. That can be cleaned using a carburetor cleaner. After these interventions the technician should perform a test drive. Let me know if it helps.
