Why you should have sport wheels

Steel and sportwheels are the two most common types of wheels used in cars. The main differences between alloy and steel wheels lie in their durability, strength and appearance. FILE PHOTO

What you need to know:

Some drivers spend quite a good amount of money on sport wheels for their cars. Is it all about looks, or is there a technical reason behind it?

Sometimes it is hard to tell what is making a particular car attractive until you look at the wheels. According to Brian Mbeizi, a mechanical engineer, sport or alloy wheels are made of aluminium, magnesium or sometimes, both. He says because they are made of aluminium or magnesium, this gives them greater strength and durability.
Traditionally, however, car wheels have been made from steel because of its strength, durability and an appearance that was earlier perceived as decent but Mbeizi says the demands of motorsport saw sport wheels increasingly adopted for their several benefits. Here are some of the benefits of having these wheels:
Aesthetic value
According to Mbeizi, Steel wheels can never look as good as sport wheels. The cosmetic upgrade and improved visual impact on the sport wheels are the major reasons a number of car owners opt for them. James Magero, a driver, says a number of people despised the way his Toyota Probox looked but after fitting it with sport wheels, everyone compliments the difference. Mbeizi says most cars sold in bonds come with steel wheels but car owners always change to alloy wheels to make their cars look better and also add value.

Better braking
According to science and sport, an alloy is a metal made by combining two or more metallic elements, especially to give greater strength or resistance to corrosion. Therefore, sport wheels are able to dissipate heat better than steel wheels. According to Thomas Kayinja, a mechanic who also works with Grace Lubega, a rally driver, sport wheels provide better braking performance and decrease the risk of brake failure, the reason a number of rally drivers prefer them. Mbeizi says the car gets better braking because there is better traction during braking since wheel hop is reduced with sport wheels.
Better performance
Mbeizi says sport wheels decrease unsprang weight because they are stronger than steel wheels and therefore, transmit less force to the springs. This allows the suspension to follow the terrain more easily, thereby providing better grip. In addition, handling, steering and cornering also get a marked improvement.

Fuel consumption
Because sport rims are lighter than steel wheels, fuel efficiency is increased to a certain extent, says Mbeizi. He adds that all the swiftness that the car gets reduces the energy it uses, therefore reducing the level of the fuel consumption. However, he says, this is very minimal and might go unnoticed by the driver.
He adds that since sport wheels are usually made of aluminium, they are better protected against corrosion and rust and this will enable your car wheels last while they look extremely nice.
As indicated earlier that sport wheels dissipate heat better, your tyres will also wear out less quickly since they remain cooler than when you are using steel wheels.

Better for tubeless tyres
Tubeless tyres are the new thing and sport wheels are completely airtight. They are therefore the perfect foil for tubeless tyres. Mbeizi says steel wheels have a common habit of losing tyre pressure and many drivers have gone through this experience.
While sport wheels from reputed companies offer significant benefits in terms of your car’s appearance and performance, they are still less durable than steel wheels, and you should make sure that your driving is predominantly on decent tarmac surfaces before opting for this upgrade.
However Mbeizi says, if you are careful, the benefits of Sport rims can easily outweigh the disadvantages.
