A good financial decision a day keeps poverty away

What you need to know:

Money. The way you earn and spend reveals so much about your life. We tend to spend more on the things we care about. We are also pushed to earn by how much we want our circumstances to get better or maintain the status quo writes Sarah Aanyu.

Do you always find yourself strapped for cash by the end of every month? Is your desire to change your financial life so strong that you are constantly doing things to achieve your desire? Or do you think you can trust that things will get better?
According to Tilda Nabbanja, the founder of the Be Money WiseR Society, people who turn their finances around usually have a strong “why” driving them on.

“Being financially literate is to appreciate that even if one comes from a humble background, they are still capable of transforming their future and that of generations after them and working relentlessly towards it,” she says.
Be Money WiseR teaches that with one wise decision at a time, anyone can slowly but definitely transform their financial lives to whatever they desire.

Be Money WiseR is an online financial literacy platform and has weekly talks where various people convene to network, innovate, learn, discuss and grow their understanding of aspects to do with money and life.
“That was an idea I conceived right from high school when I started wondering why I used up my money so fast and others could keep theirs until when they next got more. Over a period of time I noticed there were many people like me, not just students but working adults too,” says Nabbanja.
Having been bitten by the financial literacy bug, she started reading up material where she could find which she in turn shared on her Facebook page. With time she had a strong following that encouraged her to open up a physical address where people could come for more consultations.

Inspiration
With the composition of the organisation that has five directors, two assistants and 20 volunteers, Nabbanja seeks to transform people’s lives through the understanding of money matters and also shape individuals who inspire others.
“We usually do not do all the advising but we have members contribute by either asking the questions or share their money related experiences so that they can help each other with sustainable solutions,” says Nabbanja.
Much as she does not know what the future holds for the organisation, she says she derives joy in seeing people who had nothing achieve their success from scratch to become inspirational figures in their communities.

Juggling family with her jobs
“I am a fulltime banker, a mother, wife, financial adviser, inspirational speaker and founder of Be Money wiser Foundation among others. It is not easy juggling all these responsibilities. I must plan my time well or else something will escape my attention. I am usually done with work and go home at 8pm, in time to have dinner with my children and help them with their homework,” Nabbanja says.
She notes that she has since learned that it is not about the time you spend with your family but how best you make use of the little time you have with them. Having quality time together will create more memories.

Joining the foundation
The foundation does not generally charge its members fees, although some pay for personalised services.
“Most members are young people striving to start their own business, so charging them for advice would add more costs to their businesses. However, we also need money to run the organisation smoothly so we have people who pay for exclusive services,” Nabbanja explains.
Although Nabbanja plans to expand her organisation currently she only has two permanent staff because that is what she can afford right now.

Milestones
She says the foundation has since registered enough success, “We have had a lot of milestones especially witnessing people’s businesses grow and thrive. There is nothing greater than impacting on a person’s life because from that one individual, others too will be helped in one way or another,” Nabbanja says.
We have had a lot of milestones, especially having individuals transform their lives right from the working class, youth to those who are just starting out.
She says there is nothing greater than impacting a person’s life because from that one individual, others too will be helped in one way or another.

Future plans
I want to see the number of people increase, have a greater number of people making good use of their money, learn how to save and helping the others who also need the knowledge that they attained from the organisation.
She says due to demand from people, she is working on a book that will entail financial knowledge that people need.
