What you need to know:
lavatory. Today’s bath market offers something for everyone. There are modern, traditional, one-piece or two-piece, white or coloured toilets. Not sure where to begin? Gloria Kawuma explains what to consider.
Choosing the right toilet system may seem like a simple task but there are some things one has to put into consideration while purchasing one for home, office or otherwise.
Number of users
First, consider the number of people living in your home. There are systems designed for domestic use but some homes have big numbers of people living in them, rendering the ordinary system useless and inappropriate.
In such a situation it would be advisable you purchase an industrial system. This means that it is able to withstand heavy traffic. It has a flushing system that fills up within seconds ready for the next user unlike the old traditional ones, where one would have to wait a few minutes after it has been used.
Silent systems are desirable
Loud systems are not desirable, especially if one is a guest. Some years ago, when I went to visit, the room that I had been given was not self-contained. When I woke up in the middle of the dark, silent night, I had to stealthily walk into the corridor to find the toilet being careful not to stumble on anything that would wake my hosts. I was quickly done with my business when I realised I had to flush and that is when all hell broke loose.
This toilet’s flushing system was so loud that if one was to use it during the day, the door leading to the corridor had to be shut otherwise everyone in the living room would then be made aware of where you had gone when you got up and left the room. And so the mind battle I was having was whether it was really necessary to flush considering that there was no major activity that had taken place or flush and hope my hosts, whose bedroom was next door, would not be startled in their sleep.
Dual flush system
Choose a toilet that has a dual flush system. This is pocket friendly because it cuts down on the amount of water used per flush. These toilets have two flush buttons- one for half tank flush for lighter jobs (liquids) and full tank flush for heavier jobs (solids). These toilets were originally invented in Australia in reaction to the country’s continuous drought cycle and are now slowly gaining popularity around the globe.
