‘I only stop at flattering female artistes’

What you need to know:

THE KNIGHT: Dius Walugembe, alias Omulangira Dah Year See, is a presenter at Radio 4, a father of three and a husband. Promise Twinamukye had a chat with him.

When did you join media?
I started working on Radio early this year. I also had a gig on television some years ago.
How did your career start?
I loved making audio notes and sharing them with friends on WhatsApp. Whenever I would share audio clips with friends, they also shared within their circles. Before I knew it, my audio clips were spreading like a bush fire. I had fans who only knew my voice. One day, when I was seated in a bar, someone pointed at me yelling, he is the one- Omulangira. I never even knew I had fans. When a radio offer presented itself, I embraced it.
Why do people call you Omulangira?
Walugembe is a Luganda word which means a prince. I belong to the royal clan. People had appalling pronunciations of my name Dius. I decided to simplify it by breaking it down as Dah Year See.
What do you consider when choosing a music playlist?
I play urban youth music. If I can dance to a song and enjoy it, then my audience is likely to like it too. If the song does not appeal to me, most likely, it may not appeal to my audience.
Do you charge artistes to play their songs on radio?
Personally, I do not. Choosing a song for my audience has nothing to do with payment. My job is to entertain people through presentation and music.
Who do you look up to?
The reason I do not dwell on role models is that instead of being creative and being uniquely you, we end up copying and pasting what they do. I want to shine without necessarily replicating what other people do in my own life. But if you insist, well, I like Martin Lawrence, a lead actor in Bad Guys with Will Smith.

What are the challenges of working on Radio?
People think that a radio presenter’s job is so easy. They assume all we do is to sit and talk. However, in this 21st Century, listeners are informed and presenters are constantly challenged to do research before they start the show. You must know what is happening in Uganda and beyond. You need to know a bit of sport, entertainement news, international news, latest trends, among other things. It is no mean feat.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?
One day, when I was still working on TV, my boss shouted at me in front of interns. I felt so humiliated and belittled. Another instance is when someone called me ‘dios’ in public.
What has been your happiest moment?
When my son, Lucas Walugembe was born, I announced to whoever cared to listen. I was very excited to be a father.
Which artistes have you worked with?
I have worked with many, such as Bennie Gunter, Cindy, Chameleon, Geosteady, Daxx and Katel.
What qualities do you look out for in a woman?
Humility, beauty and honesty.
Have you ever crushed on a female artiste?
Of course, but I only stop at flattering them. I am only human and sometimes, there are artistes that are so tempting. They are always smart and many have got talent. But I never allow my feelings to override me.

Which female artiste do you find sexy?
Cindy Ssanyu. She has sexy legs.
Do you cook? What is your favourite dish to cook?
Yes. I can cook many dishes but I like preparing pork and posho. It is my favourite dish.

Stalkers
How do you handle stalkers?
It depends on how much they are insisting. I am a busy person that sometimes I do not pay attention to stalkers. However, for the clingy ones, I friend zone them. You never know where you will meet them in the future.

Would you date a sugar mummy?
If she understands me. An understanding woman is what every man yearns to have.
