I am too focused to be distracted by women

What you need to know:

  • KNIGHT. Ugandans have those moments when they lose it which can be rather tricky when the potential to cause physical and property damage is high.
  • That is why at every concert, you will find those beefed up and brutish looking men patrolling the crowds. Behind these men are managers such as Philip Lubogo who are contracted by companies to provide security during their events.
  • To succeed in this profession you need to be calm, focused and very alert all traits that Lubogo has in plenty, writes Isaac Ssejjombwe.

Who is Philip Lubogo?
Philip is the founder and chief executive officer of Core events services and Go Miles group LTD.

What do those companies do?
Core Events Services deals with processing event permits, planning and managing security on events, gate management and ticket verification, providing crowd control officers, providing barricades for crowd control measures, providing security gadgets such as walk through machines, walkie talkies and VIP protection.
Whether it is a corporate meeting, a party, an entertainment venue, a promotional event, or anything else you have in the works, event security always requires a rare breed of event security guards who can bring the blend of experience, judgment, sensitivity, efficiency, and professionalism that you expect and your guests deserve, that is what we provide.

What inspired you to join events security management?
As a young boy, my dream was to join the army. I loved the uniform, the discipline and especially serving one’s country. But of course this dream did not come true but the desire did not die.
Back in 2011 while attending a concert, I noticed how lax the security was which was dangerous and I felt I could do better.
Holding an event is not a simple thing. It does not matter whether it is a graduation party or an international conference the logistics are complicated enough without having to fret about such potential glitches as event security guards who just might not make the grade.
Maybe you have seen the wrong, poorly trained or inefficient event security guards at other events, I saw them too and decided we deserve better and that inspired me.

Any challenges so far?
Challenges vary, but one of them being competition from all these private security firms and individuals too but in the end, it is healthy for business. Besides that, there are stringent rules to follow when registering a security company. It is a very expensive process. The third challenge is dealing with people with selfish interests at events which can land you into trouble like being harmed. It is a risky business but lucrative if you understand it.

Have you ever been threatened while on duty?
I have been threatened on many occasions. One incident I cannot forget is when one of the notorious kifesi group members tried to attack me after a concert but thank God I had been tipped off and had security with me. I go through these threats all the time but God is still protecting me.

Do you have many stalkers?
Most people in my line of work have stalkers. There are people out there who live on freebies so they look for people who can do that for them.
My being able to access most concerts and events makes me a target for those people, but this is not something I worry about because I am always busy working. It takes a lot to distract me from my goal. As for the women, I am happy with the relationship I am in so their tricks never work on me.

How many concerts have you handled in your career?
I have been fortunate enough to work on a large number of them, especially those featuring international stars. I worked on the Davido concert, Jazz Safari, Don Moen, Ne-yo concert, Tarrus Riley, Morgan Heritage concert, Wizkid, Abryanz awards, KCCA Carnival, KCCA FC international matches, MTN marathons and the presidential debate among others.
What are the procedures that you go through when providing security at an event?
First we get permits from responsible authorities such as KCCA and Nema before the event, then contact police to alert them about the function and ask for their permission and we then plan the entire internal flow of security together with the organisers.
