Make your child’s reading table colourful

What you need to know:

  • If you are concerned about costs of regularly changing furniture as they grow, consider having a carpenter to make a desk with adjustable height or extendable design that will help adapt to the changing needs of your child.
  • After you have selected the desk, the position in which you place it matters. If you can, a great position would be in front of the window to take advantage of the natural light and cool breeze of air.

Reading table. Because they are children, you ought to make their reading experience fun at home. Reading tables should be attractive. Make your children’s reading tables colourful, give them befitting shapes and drawers to keep their reading and writing items intact, writes Gloria Kawuma.

I visited a site with a beautiful residential house that was still under construction. As I walked through the rooms, I checked out a study room which I first mistook for a laundry room.

There was a low standing in-built concrete, shelving structure which I assumed would house a washing machine but turns out that was leg room for children to read and revise.

According to the house design, these concrete stands were going to be completed with a granite marble slab on the top.
The argument, I can relate, is its sturdy, strong and unless the child’s physical build up is made of steel, there is no way that top will not last till their teenage years.

What puzzled me all day was the fact that I could not fathom why it would seem okay that a child’s study time would be enhanced by a cold, hard surface.
It actually reminded me of my secondary boarding school days, when the pressure intensified as we drew closer to examinations period.

In a bid to read for a longer time into the night, some girls would sit by their beds with their feet placed in buckets or basins filled with cold water, to keep them awake.
Your child’s reading table is one of the items that need to be taken into consideration after figuring out the general aesthetics of the study room.

Table size matters
You do not want to buy something that is too big or a regular size designed for adults in the name of ‘kids grow up fast.’
Children need small desks in order to be comfortable. This improves their concentration and makes the child feel special, sitting in a space that is designated specially for them.

Shape, colour and drawers
Regular desks for kids are boring and carry the impression of hard labour, homework, difficult numbers or tasks. Give the reading table an interesting shape and colour and drawers to make studying more enjoyable and inviting.
