Teach children planning and time management skills

What you need to know:

  • Perhaps, that is the reason why some people believe that every child should experience boarding school, to enable them to grow into responsible beings and understand time management.

Rain and thunderstorms have become a common thing lately.
On a Sunday afternoon, my child went outside with a bucket full of clothes to wash. “Why?” I asked. As he begun to murmur, I could not help but wonder why, with all the time they had at their fingertips, they could not be smart with their time and resources.
It was Sunday afternoon and there was no ready uniform for school on Monday. Washing a uniform on a Sunday had a hidden message.

To encourage personal responsibility and self-drive, children should be taught how to plan and manage time and other resources at their disposal.
Whereas they can be assisted and guided, they each carry personal responsibility to plan for their week and to work with the available resources.

Often times, I have had to remind, reprimand, and sometimes even raise my voice just to get things done. I have often pointed out that poor planning leads to time wastage, which in turn leads to frustration.
My children know that I have zero tolerance for poor planners and there have been many instances when I refused to be part of programmes that are thrown at me any day, anytime.

I often say we all have 24 hours and it is up to each one of us to be excellent stewards of the time.
So it was very interesting to see the members washing their uniforms and getting them cleaned for the week, albeit hours late.
Being the principled parent that I am, I was not about to get involved because I would be aiding and encouraging a vice.

From the hassle and inconvenience, hopefully there would be much better planning and preparation, next time. Hopefully, the next weekend would get them to start the washing, perhaps on Friday evening or Saturday morning.
Generally, folks tend to always do things at the last minute. I am on a mission to change the status quo and to teach my children to appreciate time management.

Perhaps, that is the reason why some people believe that every child should experience boarding school, to enable them to grow into responsible beings and understand time management.
Such lessons help children to navigate dynamic life.
