Getting rid of dental plaque

Plaque is a sticky, colourless substance that constantly forms on the teeth and along the gum line which can cause cavities and gum disease over a period of time. Dian Ndagire, an orthodontist, shares tips on how to get rid of dental plaque using home remedies.

Charcoal
Crash a few pieces of charcoal to get a powder. Dip a cloth in water and then in the powder and apply on the teeth for a couple of minutes. Brush in small, gentle circles, spit and rinse well. One can do this twice a day for as long as it takes for the plaque to totally disappear.
Orange peelings
Rather than throwing away the orange peels, one can use them to prevent dental plaque. Rub orange peels directly onto the teeth. This will help to fight tartar building microorganisms on the enamel. Alternatively, smash the peels and apply them to the stained areas of the teeth, leave to rest and rinse.

Guava leaves and salt
Smash a few leaves from the guava tree, mixing together with a pinch of salt and rub the smashed leaves around the teeth. Better still, one can chew the leaves with a little salt added to them two to three times a day until you start to see positive results.

Lemon juice
Squeeze the juice of one lemon and use a toothbrush to rub the juice on the teeth and gums. Leave it on for some minutes, this will help to dissolve the plaque and it will eventually peel off as one rinses their mouth.

Baking soda
Add a pinch of salt to baking soda, apply it on the toothbrush and gently scrub through the mouth for about five minutes. Rinse the mouth with lukewarm water. This can be done till the plaque disappears.
