Effective ways to prevent vomiting

Add one teaspoon of grated ginger root to a cup of boiling water, cover and let it simmer for five to 10 minutes.

According to Dr Elijah Kakande, paeditrician, vomiting is often the body’s reaction to a temporary problem. Common causes of vomiting can be overeating, drinking too much alcohol, food poisoning and pregnancy, among others. To overcome the feeling of nausea and vomiting, one can try these simple home remedies.

Ginger
Components such as volatile oils and pungent phenol compounds present in ginger root control the nervous system, stomach and intestines, which in turn reduces nausea. Ginger is also effective in pregnancy-related nausea.
Add one teaspoon of grated ginger root to a cup of boiling water, cover and let it simmer for five to 10 minutes. Strain and add some honey and lemon juice. Drink it while still warm. You can also chew a piece of raw ginger to ease vomiting symptoms.

Lemon
The neutralising acids in lemon help create bicarbonates in the stomach that in turn gas, bloating, heartburn and an upset stomach. Lemon also helps to balance the body’s natural pH levels. Mix one teaspoon of lemon juice with honey and take the mixture for immediate relief. You can also cut the lemon into halves, holding one close to your nose and inhaling the smell.

Cinnamon
In a cup of boiling water, add one-half or one teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If you do not have the powder, simply use a cinnamon stick.

Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar aids in the detoxification of the body and treats food poisoning due to its antimicrobial properties.
Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and one tablespoon of honey in a glass of water. Drink it and repeat as necessary.

Caution
The smell of vomit can sometimes cause more vomiting so freshen your breath. Rinse your mouth with one teaspoon of vinegar diluted in one-half cup of water.
