To Imelda Nakidde a nurse at St Francis Hospital in Naggalama, Mukono, toenail fungus is a common problem and symptoms may include inflammation, swelling, yellowing, and thickening of the nails.
However, it is usually not painful, unless the infection spreads.

Apple cider vinegar
This can help prevent toenail fungus from spreading by killing the bacteria and fungi. Mix apple cider vinegar with water and soak your toenails in the solution for about 30 minutes. When done, dry your toenail thoroughly. Another option is to mix ground rice flour with apple cider vinegar and then apply the paste on and around the affected nails and gently scrub.

Tea tree oil
This has antiseptic as well as antifungal properties that help a lot in the treatment of toenail fungus. Mix a few drops of tea tree oil in a teaspoon of olive oil or coconut oil. With the help of a cotton ball apply the mixture on the affected toenail.

Baking soda
Mix baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and salt in hot water. Mix the ingredients thoroughly well then add some vinegar to it. Soak the affected toenail in the solution for some time. Later wash with clean water and dry the foot thoroughly.
Garlic and lavender oil
Mix crushed garlic or garlic oil with vinegar and then apply it on the infected area and cover with a bandage or a towel. Leave the bandage on for a couple of hours.
Apply a few drops of lavender oil to the infected nails every night. Cover your feet with wool or cotton socks to prevent the oil from rubbing off.
