What does a rumbling stomach mean?

When one is hungry without food in the stomach or even most parts of the intestines, still the intestines may contract but this time will only propel excess bacteria, mucus and gas and with nothing to help muffle the sound since there is no food, there may be the rumbling noise of hunger.

What you need to know:

  • Upon contraction of the wall, food will be propelled, mixed and digested.
  • The movement of food and gas will make noises known as borborygmi which are louder if the food is mostly liquid as when one is about to have diarrhoea or has lots of gas when the noise may be accompanied by some abdominal discomfort.

When I am hungry, my stomach rumbles sometimes with or without pain. Why? Elasto

Dear Elasto,
When the stomach is empty, one may feel the need to eat or hunger. Sometimes this hunger may be accompanied by stomach pain called hunger pangs, caused by strong contractions of the empty stomach as if to remind one that it is time to eat.
The intestines are hollow tubes with muscles in their walls.

So, rumbling of the stomach when one is hungry, has lots of gas or is about to have diarrhoea is normal even if it is embarrassing.
