When can I have sex after injectaplan?

If one gets the first Depo-Provera shot later than five days after the period, she may not prevent ovulation so she should use condoms for the first seven days following the injection to prevent pregnancy.

Can I have sex the same day that I get my family planning injection? William

Dear William,
The family planning injection used most in Uganda is Depo-Provera (Injectaplan).
Women are advised to take the injection during their normal period so that they do not take it when they are already pregnant.

Some Ugandans have a habit of taking the injection at any time and even when they take a urinary pregnancy test in a few cases the test may be negative yet they are already pregnant but the urine has not showed pregnancy yet.

The injection starts to work immediately after the first shot if it is taken within the first five days from the first day of the menstrual period. If one gets the first Depo-Provera shot later than five days after the period, she may not prevent ovulation so she should use condoms for the first seven days following the injection to prevent pregnancy.

One must return for other shots every three months and here she is protected immediately after the injection and can have unprotected sex immediately after the injection.
