What you need to know:

Every new year comes with new decor trends, although there are those that keep coming back. We share decor trends you need to look out for this year.

The New Year is always an opportunity for a décor reboot. Arbitrary as it may be, it is an opportunity to leave behind what is bad and embrace what is better. When you are deciding what to overhaul, do not forget about your house interior.
Here is a head start for decor lovers on 2019 decorating.

Matte black
Matte black is becoming a trending finish especially in kitchens and bathrooms.
Adding it to a transitional space in your room pulls the whole room together into one sharp look, according to Irene Kajubi, an interioir designer at Interior expressions.
Also, if you are updating your kitchen countertops, consider matte black even in a small space.

Black natural wood cabinets give a perfect natural polished look to your kitchen. You may also choose matte black hardware instead of stainless, and if you are replacing your dishware or flatware, look beyond traditional glossy white to go for this dark new classic instead.

“Choose to replace a stainless or white sink that is usually prone to staining with a matte black composite model, which is a perfect complement to the white quartz countertops,” she remarks.
The easiest to create an impact in your bathroom is replacing your chrome bathroom faucet for a matte black model.

You can also choose to have understated matte black finish lines for the mirrors and drawer pulls so that your room does not look overwhelmed.
She adds that: “Bold black exterior with matte black has had a rising popularity in the past. It is, however, important to keep it simple. The trim, doors and window casings can all be kept matte black, leaving the lighting and greenery as the highlights.”

Use plants
Plants have been a prominent feature of interior design for centuries. They are never out of fashion. Adding plants as an interior design element brings added health benefits such as reduce stress and lower certain pollutants.
“Oversized plants are a perfect option that makes a statement without committing to a bold colour scheme, says Kajubi, adding: “They are ideal for tropical settings. Large flowerpots work best in a uncluttered interior to avoid an overcrowded look. Depending on the size and the room it will take up in your home, the planter you choose is as important as the plant itself.”
Small plants are very versatile and can be used throughout the home from the bathroom to the office.
“Succulents in marble planters will require minimal care and thrive well in dry climates making them the perfect first-time houseplant. If you have enough space in the sitting room, you can line up or hang plants in matte black vases. Ensure to choose plants that have massive foliage, air fresheners,” Kajubi remarks.

Botanical wall paper
You can also have vibrant botanical wallpapers or choose to have accessories with plant patterns. Plant themed soft furnishings like throw pillows on plain sofas and rugs would be ideal for trendy interior décor.

Mixing styles
According to Daniel Mugambeko, an interior designer at Dantel interiors Limited, something that will be out, are rooms that feel overly designed with only one look.

Mixing of styles is what will be trending this year instead of having everything in one note of mid-century modern with all the same wood colour and style.

In the year 2019, there is a speculation that interior designers will embrace the new clash or match trend other than using neutral monotonous colours that was trending in the previous years.
He says: “Go multiple colours for your interior décor this year. Sleek lines, neutral palette and stark geometry are so old fashioned.
Mixing colours and patterns will be huge in this year- playing with the idea of pairing seeming opposing patterns or colours.”

The colour pallette
Choose a limited colour palette since too many colours can detract and make each piece of accessories in your room feel like it stands alone. There is a need to repeat the same colours throughout the space to bring items in the room together.
Be selective with a few colours you like and the rooms throughout the house will feel unified, no matter the variation in decoration.

Mugambeko says: “Choose a unifying pattern that you can use throughout the space to keep the room together and preserve decor from appearing scattered.”

She explains that it unifies the varying styles of décor and brings consistency to the style. Pick up on the lines of a sofa and repeat that pattern throughout the space.
“Interior designers are moving away from the cooler, gray tone neutrals right now in favour of stark white and warmer neutrals. A living, dining or bedroom with paints, fabrics, accessories, and rugs in the jewel tones create glamourous look against a backdrop of white architectural elements that may be in your space,” he says.

Geometric patterns
Geometric patterns are becoming increasingly popular across the interior design industry and especially across soft furnishings and are expected to be trendy this year. Patterned, colourful fabrics add contrast, vibrancy and a contemporary feel.

Mugambeko says: “Nature-based geometric patterns are great tools of interior design and they help create bright and modern interiors, balance and harmonise rooms as well as add an interesting, fresh touch to home decorating.”
Incorporating both rough and smooth textures adds classic interest to an interior, especially if you choose a simple colour palette.

Choose one colour to serve as a unifying factor throughout your design.
Make it a point to find balance in scale and symmetry because similar lines or patterns create design harmony even if the pieces are different styles or textures.

The rules

For over years, some home décor designs have been repetitive and are dependent on the style and personality of the homeowner.
It is also important how you arrange and match them with the colours that are in the room as well as the accessories you plan to use.
Irene Kajubi, an interioir designer at Interior expressions, says: “Some décor trends are timeless and do not change. They are very much dependent on how and where you plan to position your accent wall, candle holders, lamps, plants, rags, wall hangings, art pieces or throw pillows.”
