An artistic impression of the house. Plan by Seraphino Junior Ogola

What you need to know:

  • Wood has been greatly embraced because it makes the floor look elegant, unique and classic. Wooden floors can last for more than seven years if handled well. They also keep the house warm.
  • Are you the kind of person with a taste for both modern and traditional architecture? With this plan, you have both styles in one house, and get to enjoy privacy and comfort.

People not only build houses to have a place of their own but to also enjoy their privacy and be comfortable. This five-bedroom house gives you exactly that. It is spacious, comfortable and leaves you enough space for parties and other activities on the outside. Having two floor makes it good for site viewing because it can give you a clear view of your neighborhood.

Seraphino Junior Ogola, an architect, notes that the main concept here is combining modern and traditional structures setup, in a modern way. “We look at the layout of the building, the modern parking and division of spaces within. Traditionally, we see the two protruding sections of the structure (spaces for bedrooms) and the long windows that run from up to down are 2000x900mm,” he explains.

Specifications
The house has a sitting room, kitchen, dining, study, kitchen, porch and balcony. It is also has a garage that can accommodates one car.
Ogola says the house is unique because of its division of spaces. There are two bedrooms on the ground floor that are adjacent to each other. The living space, dining, kitchen, and the store.

The ground floor also has two bedrooms with stairs that run in an L-shape to the first floor. These stairs being in the living room space (covering the sitting and dining room area) gives an appeasing look to the living space. Finishes can be of wood or concrete, but most preferred is wood.
The beauty about it is that its a storage house with some rooms up and others down stairs, which makes it comfortable for the occupants.

The balcony
“The balcony is on the 1st floor giving you a clear look on the vicinity, get fresh air and relax, overlook activities taking place in your home, the balcony is also big enough to host a small party of 10 to 15 people,” Ogola adds.

It is also a great shield for the sun and rain with a small roofing and can therefore be used anytime regardless of the weather condition.
For comfort and beauty, add a few seats and plants. The could be flowering plants that add the glamour when they flower or green plants that emphasis the green in a home.

“Balconies should be given special attention because they are some of the most desired places in a home by both guests and home owners,” says Mary Namukose, an interior designer.
She adds that balconies should not be cluttered as this will reduce its value. Clean more often and proof them in case they are on the upper floors and you have children around to avoid accidents.

The cost
It may cost between Shs120 to Shs200m depending on the clients choice of materials and finishing choices. However this is just an estimation it can be more or less depending on materials and type of finishing used.
A qualitative surveyor working on the project can give you the accurate amount.

Yard
The house occupies a minimal space leaving you with enough space for the yard. You can have an outdoor kitchen in this space, add a latrine all depending on your desires. The garden space is also big and can host house parties of a few guest. This house can fit on 100x75ft plot of land.

Using wood on the floor
Mary Namukose an interior designer gives us tips on using wood floors.
Wood has been greatly embraced because it makes the floor look elegant, unique and classic. Wooden floors can last for more than seven years if handled well. They also keep the house warm.
Some of the wood floor options include; rough, parquet, real wood, laminated and grooves.
Namukose adds that wood floors need maximum care as they could get attacked by insects such as termites, treating it regularly is paramount.

“Use a dump cloth to clean or alternatively wipe dry when you have used water to clean, moisture could damage the furniture if constantly exposed,’ she adds.
She notes that plants are magical and therefore should be incorporated to enhance the beauty of the wood. She prefers non-flowering plants for indoor to create uniformity.
“However, flowering plants can be used when you are sure of the flowers the plants will bare because in most cases, flowers clash with the indoor colours making the place messy,” she adds.
